Abstract (english) Occupational health is faced with similar challenges for workers as at the time of the industrial revolution. Factory workers are inclined to suffer from occupational health illnesses namely illnesses linked to the musculoskeletal system, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, lumbosacral syndrome or cervical brachial syndrome. In Croatia, the textile industry is relatively well developed and mainly employs female workers who are more likely to suffer from these types of syndromes. Employers are required to ensure safe working conditions for their employees, whether employing minors, female or male workers. It isn’t only the working conditions that can impact those suffering from the aforementioned syndromes, genetic predisposition is also a contributing factor. Those workers who already have limited working capabilities should not undertake tasks which could further limit their working capabilities. In this regard, occupational medicine has an important role. The employer makes an assessment of the workplace risks and allocates employees in line with this. Companies should adhere to the following healthy and safety principles: providing a safe working environment, healthy working processes and educational programmes that promote employees’ wellbeing and highlight any risk factors in the workplace. Unfortunately in Croatia, there are few companies that respect the aforementioned principles. However entry into the European Union and new legal frameworks have had a positive impact. In this final thesis, it will be demonstrated to what extend working conditions impact on employees, and how to help prevent, diagnose and treat work related illnesses. To avoid delayed treatment, prevent acute conditions becoming chronic conditions and to shorten recovery times, early diagnosis, preventative measures and education are essential. These can help reduce the number of illnesses linked to the musculoskeletal system, which also lengthens employees working careers. Before mentioned syndromes are often not recognized on time and neglected in odern occupation healt care. Only a healthy worker is productive, effective and efficient and brings added value to his working environment.
