Abstract (english) Healthcare-associated infections are a major problem worldwide, with 5-10% of hospitalized patients getting such an infection during treatment at a health facility. The World Health Organization has recognized this problem and has begun to develop guidelines for hand hygiene in health care facilites. The guidelines apply to health and non-health professionals and include recommendations on indications of hand hygiene, hand hygiene techniques, surgical hand washing, selection of hand hygiene products, the role of the health facility and education. When we talk about hygiene, then we adhere to the concept of „My five moments for hand hygiene“. The very concept of hand hygiene refers to the process of decontamination or hand washing or alcohol rubbing with the aim of reducing or completely removing microorganisms. Hand washing is considered to be the most important, cheapest and most economical method in the prevention of nosocomial infections. Non-cooperation on hand hygiene is a complex problem that includes elements such as lack of knowledge and lack of motivation about the importance of hand hygiene. Proper implementation of hand hygiene and education will contribute to reducing the number of infections related to health care and raise awareness of health and non-health professionals, by accepting methods, indications, and means fot hand hygiene and increase cooperation in hand hygiene in patient care.
The aim of this thesis is to show how much health professionals know about hand hygiene, how important it is to properly implement hand hygiene or whether hand hygiene is considered important in preventing nosocomial infections.
The method used in the preparation of this thesis is a structured questionnaire completed by the medical staff of the General Hospital Karlovac. 100 respondents participated, and the research was conducted in the period from 01.05.2021.-31.05.2021. The data obtained from the research can contribute to better knowledge, information and education in the prevention of nosocomial infections and the implementation of proper hand hygiene.
The concluson is that it is necessary to reduce nosocomial infections to a minimum by general and specific measures, education of stuff, patients and visitors, implementation of proper hand hygiene and adherence to work according to the protocols and guidelines of the World Health Organization.
