Abstract Uloga emocionalne inteligencije i samopoštovanja u medicinskih sestara/tehničara ima veliki značaj u profesionalnom pristupu pacijentima.
Iako neke medicinske sestre/tehničari možda nisu svjesni različitih aspekata emocionalne inteligencije, u radu s različitim profilima zdravstvenih djelatnika i bolesnika mogu nenamjerno steći i primijeniti neke od vještina.
Abstract (english) The role of emotional intelligence and self-esteem in nursing is of great importance in the professional approach to patients. A low level of emotional intelligence or a low level of self-esteem directly affects the quality of health care. The application of the principles of emotional intelligence is necessary for nurses, with the aim of creating conditions for general satisfaction at the workplace, and thus a higher quality of healthcare provided. The objectives of this research are to determine the level of emotional competence and self-esteem of nurses, determine the relationship between emotional competence and self-esteem, and determine if there is a difference in self-esteem and emotional competence with regard to gender, chronological age, level of formal education, length of service, place of work, and working hours.
The research used a structured survey "Self-esteem and emotional competence in the nursing profession" via a Google form on social networks. Participation in the survey was anonymous and voluntary. The research was conducted in the period from July to August 2021. The questionnaire consisted of 11 questions, which were answered by 306 respondents. The questionnaire itself consists of three parts - nine questions about socioeconomic status, the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale and the Emotional Competence Questionnaire.
The research showed that there is a high level of emotional competence and self-esteem among nurses, where a higher level of emotional competence is positively related to the level of self-esteem. Furthermore, the level of self-esteem of nurses differs according to chronological age, level of formal education and length of service. The level of emotional competence of nurses varies depending on the degree of formal education. Although some nurses may not be aware of the different aspects of emotional intelligence, working with different profiles of healthcare professionals and patients they may inadvertently acquire and apply some of the skills.
