Reduced kidney function or complete cessation of kidney function would be fatal to a person if replacement methods did not exist. The kidneys have a key role in filtering waste products, excess fluid and toxins, in maintaining the proper balance of electrolytes in the body. A large number of people use some form of renal function replacement, some of which are hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. It certainly differs and has its advantages and disadvantages. While hemodialysis requires the patient to come to a health facility, peritoneal dialysis allows patients greater independence. In this group are younger people, who, despite their illness, work, take care of their families, and their overall quality and satisfaction of life is better. The elderly are a vulnerable group, especially on dialysis. They are immunocompromised, exposed to various risks, various recommendations and rules that they must follow, many of them are unable to travel and come to the dialysis center on their own. A large number of elderly people are on hemodialysis, where the quality of life is further reduced in contrast to peritoneal dialysis. Advances in medicine, medical technology and various researches continue to improve the efficiency and practicality of dialysis procedures and increase the quality of life of people on dialysis.
