Abstract Poremećaji spavanja postaju sve veći javnozdravstveni izazov, zahvativši mnogobrojnu populaciju, pa tako i studente.
Abstract (english) Sleep disorders are becoming a growing public health challenge, affecting a large population, including students. Although sleep disorders are very common, they are not talked about too much. In addition to poor education on approaches to treating sleep-related problems, there is also a lack of research on the frequency of use of sleep aids, whether they are pharmacological or natural.
The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which sleep quality is impaired among students, as well as what is the most common type of preparations that students use to improve sleep quality. Finally, the goal was to examine whether the use of these preparations helps to achieve better academic performance. The research was conducted through a questionnaire of 105 undergraduate and graduate students of nursing in the Republic of Croatia. The survey questions included sociodemographic data, information about students, their sleep habits, and habits of using herbal and pharmacological preparations to help with sleep. Part of the questionnaire was the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index as a unit of measurement for assessing sleep quality. The results of this research show that the use of sleeping aids is not preferred among students, where out of 105 respondents, 60% do not use any of the types of preparations. The most commonly used preparations among those who use are melaton and lemon balm, which also indicates that students prefer natural preparations, namely 97.61% of respondents, while pharmacological ones are present in 35.72%, regardless of whether they are used alone or in combination with natural.
The conducted research can determine that the association between the use of preparations to improve sleep and academic performance is statistically significant. Among students who have excellent academic performance, the use of preparations has not been recorded. Among students with very good academic performance, 6.35% of respondents actively use preparations, while students with good academic performance 32.00% of them also actively use preparations to improve the quality of sleep. As for the results of the research related to the quality of sleep, most students go to bed between 11:00 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. The time it takes for them to fall asleep in the median is 20 minutes, and they spend 7 hours sleeping. Most students feel tired and exhausted after waking up, but also most students believe that they do not suffer from the problem of insomnia. Problems with memory and maintaining concentration are also reported by the majority of students.
