Down syndrome is marked by a series of problems involving the general stagnation of development, and a variety of congenital and acquired defects. Down syndrome is very complex and for a successful treatment, habilitation and rehabilitation a large number of professionals, from doctors, nurses, therapists to psychologists is required. The nurse as a health care worker has a major role in educating parents and later on people with Down syndrome. The paper presents the potential of nursing diagnoses that a person with Down syndrome may have and interventions that can remove or at least partially relieve their problems and difficulties. It shows how important working with people with DS is, and how much effort, knowledge, patience and empathy is required for positive results. People with DS from birth and throughout life require health care and protection in order to achieve the best possible quality of life and to adopt a greater degree of independence and knowledge according to their abilities and capabilities. The education and socialization of people with DS is fundamentally dependent on the symptoms they have. Regardless of the similar appearance among people with DS, they can be very different depending on the influence of the social environment in which they are growing up. Therefore it is necessary and crucial to people with DS to have the appropriate stimulus social environment.
