Abstract (english) | Alcoholism is the most common addiction disease and one of the most serious socio – medical problems of today and occurs in all social and economic groups, both genders and at every age.
Although alcohol drinking and problems of excessive drinking have always been more common in men than in women, alcoholism in women is a growing problem today. The number of alcohol addicted women is thought to be growing faster than the overall increase in the number of alcoholics.
Alcoholism in women and men has certain peculiarities, which first relates to the causes of drinking. There are also differences in the way of drinking, age when they begin to drink, and in the consequences of excessive drinking between a man and a woman.
The causes of alcoholism in women are very complex. In most cases, alcohol addiction in women occurs as a result of primary neurotic disorders, the most significant being symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Despite the fact that people today have a more open attitude towards alcohol addiction, this problem is approached more openly, and with more interest than before, yet most people still have the wrong image of alcohol addicts today, especially when it comes to a woman being addicted to alcohol. Because of all this, alcohol addicts, in order to avoid conviction, drink secretly, do not want to admit that they have a problem, and seek help to a much lesser extent and later than alcohol addicted man.
The aim of this study is to investigate whether there is a trend of increasing alcohol addiction among women in the 2014-2018 period at the Alcoholism Division of the Clinic for Psychiatry, Alcoholism and other addictions of the, KBC „Sisters of Mercy“ and to investigate factors (age, gender, marital status, working status, place of residence, additional psychiatric disorders, number of relapses) affecting the prevalence of the disease. |
