Abstract Spolno prenosive infekcije su dugo vremena zdravstveni problem u cijelom svijetu. Preko
Abstract (english) Sexually transmitted infections have been a significant global health problem for a long time. Over 300-350 million people worldwide get sexually transmitted diseases every year, of which two thirds are younger than 25 years of age. In men, Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection is manifested by inflammation and purulent discharge from the urethra, and in women the symptoms are very mild or absent. According to data from the Croatian Institute of Public Health, in 2017 a total of eight cases of gonorrhoea were reported. The most important facts for sexually transmitted disease prevention are responsible sexual behaviour, early detection and treatment of both partners. Responsible sexual behaviour implies abstinence or sexual intercourse exclusively in a mutually faithful relationship, as well as regular and proper use of protection during every sexual intercourse.
The survey questionnaire in this thesis was used to analyse the level of knowledge of nursing students about the sexually transmitted disease caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The survey was conducted online by using Google Forms between April 26 and June 26, 2020, and consisted of 15 survey questions. A total of 207 nursing students participated in the study, of which 84.5% were female and 15.5% male. The majority of respondents, 57% of them, were aged 21-24. A largest number of respondents, i.e. 54.6%, were students in the 3rd year of undergraduate nursing programme. Furthermore, 71.5% of students who participated in the survey study at University
North in Varaždin. Of the total number of survey participants, 47.3% work in the health sector.
A total of 84.1% of students believe that the incidence of the disease is more common in younger age groups. Moreover, 78.7% of participants believe that gonorrhoea can affect other organ systems besides the genital system. A total of 57% of students believe that men are more likely to suffer from asymptomatic genital gonorrhoea, while 43% of them think they are women. The symptoms in women are mild and the infection can go unnoticed. Of the total number of participants, 84.1% believe that the incidence of the disease is more common in younger age groups. In modern society, adolescents enter sexual intercourse earlier, some as young as 13 to 16 years old.
The research indicates that students have a satisfactory knowledge on the sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. This can be attributed to the fact that the participants in the survey were exclusively nursing students who learn about sexually transmitted diseases through their study program and are obliged to be informed about them, as well as about the ways of transmission, treatment and prevention of diseases.
