Aging is a normal life process that with years brings many changes on organs and organ systems. Croatia is one of the countries that have high percentage of elderly people. Aging process is very individual and unique for every person and everybody ages differently. For older people physical ability is decreased. Function of the heart decreases with age and leads to extenuation in blood supply to the organs. Some of the symptoms of coronary heart disease for elders are less expressed than in the younger age and non-specific symptoms are more common. For elderly people heart pain is often non present but it manifests itself as shortness of breath, weakness, syncope and palpitations resulting from heart failure. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in elder people are common cause of death in the world. The electrocardiogram is one of the most important indicators for CVD and eventual coronary changes. Electrocardiogram (ECG) is a curve obtained by recording the electrical activity of the heart. With aging heart increases weight for approximately 1 gram per year due to an increase in blood pressure, body weight and metabolic processes. Acute myocardial infarction is a medical condition when necrosis occurs one part of the myocardium due to interruption of blood supply to the coronary artery or its branches. In acute myocardial infarction a patient describes pain that is localized retrosternally with spread to both shoulders or to just one shoulder. This type of pain is often described as heaviness in the chest. In the elderly, this pain is less recognized and clinical picture often manifests itself with atypical symptoms. The equivalent of pain for elder people is manifested by dyspnea which can be tachypnea or bradypnea often accompanied by cough. In acute myocardial infarction we differentiate two forms of STEMI and NSTEMI. To diagnose acute myocardial infarction there has to be some criteria such as assessment of chest pain, clinical picture of pain, changes in the ECG and an increase in cardiac enzymes in the serum. AIM is a life-threatening condition that requires emergency response. Early recognition of AIM symptoms, expertise and education of the medical staff is very important in this critical situation. It is necessary to apply therapy as early as possible in order to avoid complications of acute myocardial infarction. Atrial fibrillation is one of the most common arrhythmias while the risk of developing FA is twice as high in the elder age. The diagnosis of atrial fibrillation is based of a recorded ECG while the care is focused on relieving symptoms and assessing the risk for FA.
