Empathy is an part of the nurse-patient relationship. The basic nursing task is to understand the patient’s situation, needs, and feelings, and empathy is the basis for that understanding. In the health care system, empathy is described as the ability to understand the feelings, desires, ideas and behaviors of another person as accurately as possible, as well as the ability to show that understanding. It increases patient satisfaction, creates trust between the patient and the medical staff, and results in better treatment outcomes. For empathic communication, it is important to look at the given situation from the interlocutor's point of view. Empathic skills are necessary to provide more effective care, can be learned, and are important for collaborative relationships. Empathy is a skill that cannot be achieved by theoretical learning alone and on the basis of observation and imitation. It is part of the personality of each individual and is built through many years of practice. The aim of this Master thesis is to point out the importance of empathy and empathic communication and to assess the level of empathy of nurses/technicians. The survey of empathy among nurses/technicians included 379 respondents from Croatia. According to the conducted research, the majority of respondents expressed a medium level of empathy. Differences in empathy were found regarding gender and age. Female respondents are more empathetic than male respondents, and people over the age of 50 show a higher level of empathy. The obtained results show how much the respondents are aware of the positive impact of empathy and empathic communication in working with patients and the importance of empathy in everyday life. It can be concluded that empathy has a beneficial effect on patients and health professionals, contributing to personal satisfaction, better relationships and cooperation. Empathy and empathic communication should be learned at all levels of education of nurses/technicians. It is important that during formal education, health professionals acquire the knowledge and skills to understand the patient's feelings and that in further work they further build in the creation of empathic abilities.
