Abstract (english) | Introduction: Today, nursing is a highly required profession that is in the center of attention, and it presents a supporting pillar of health care. Nurses make up the largest workforce in health services. Deficiency of investment in the profession and growing indifference to it are just two key issues related to the lack of nurses. Simply, there would be no response without them, and if their further migration continues, staff shortages will pose even greater public health problems.
Methods: The research was conducted using an online survey, which was transmitted through social networks in the country of Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia, and was created via the Google Forms form. It was filled in by nurses / technicians of various levels of education from the three countries in the period from 20.04 to 13.05.2021.
Results: In the survey participated 226 participants, nurses/technicians from the Republic of Croatia (48.67%), the Republic of Slovenia (10.62%) and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (40.71%). The largest number of participants are women. The average age of the participants is 36.9 years old. Most of the participants have completed high school for a medical technician or undergraduate professional / university study. The average length of service of participants is 14.8 years. The largest number of participants, 65.04%, are employed in secondary health care. The survey shows that 121 participants (53.54%) are ready to leave their home country and go to work abroad. Furthermore, 55.75% of participants (N=126) do not think about leaving the nursing profession, although the answers to the questions show dissatisfaction with the system, while 44.25% of participants (N=100) think about leaving the nursing profession to do something else. Conclusion: A survey conducted in these three countries showed that as many as 53.54% of respondents are ready to leave their home country and go to work abroad, but within the nursing profession. This is a situation where the demand for nurses exceeds the supply. We can hope that this will soon be
more appreciated, and that someone will look back at the chronic deficiency that accompanies us, and that educated nurses / technicians in Croatia, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina will see opportunities for progress, training and quality work in the home countries, with the possibility of obtaining adequate working conditions, desired salaries and opportunities for progress. |
