Abstract (english) The most commonly used and most available means of addiction is alcohol, and its effect on the body varies depending on the amount consumed. Factors such as alcohol consumption and smoking lead to obesity, which greatly increases the risk of developing chronic and malignant diseases. A person addicted to alcohol consumes excessive alcohol and develops mental, physical and social disorders. Complications occur after prolonged and excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages.
The research was conducted using the method of a one-time survey with a questionnaire on a suitable sample of 449 respondents, citizens of the Republic of Croatia. The survey was conducted during April and May 2021. Respondents' anonymity was preserved by sending an online survey form where respondents were not asked to put any identifiers, and all responses were grouped together in one place. MS Excel and IBM SPSS 26.0 were used for statistical data processing.
The survey was attended by 449 respondents of both sexes, and 83.3% of respondents are women, while men made up 16.7% of the sample. With regard to age, the most represented were persons aged 18 to 30 (33.9%), followed by persons aged 31 to 40 (29%). 59.7% of respondents state that they drink alcoholic beverages occasionally, and according to the frequency, most respondents drank at least once a month (49.2%). Of the total number, 58.8% of men consume alcohol, while only 9.9% of women claim the same.
It can be concluded, at least according to the statistical data, that men consume larger amounts of alcohol and that they are the ones who suffer from health problems caused by the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Despite the devastating data on all the harmful effects that alcohol brings, the majority of the population still justifies consumption as a healthy practice. Given that nowadays it is increasingly moving towards the consumption of alcoholic beverages, it is necessary to introduce prevention already in primary schools.
