Abstract (english) Acute myocardial infarction, also known as heart attack, is one of the leading causes of death in the developed world. According to World Health Organization, about 17.9 million people die annually from heart and blood vessel diseases in the world. In 2018, 23,048 people died of cardiovascular diseases in the Republic of Croatia, which is 43.7% of the total number of deaths. Acute myocardial infarction is a life-threatening condition and occurs due to a sudden interruption in the coronary blood supply, causing tissue damage. Clinically, it manifests itself as severe retrosternal pain, often at rest, characterized by burning, tightness and pressure that does not subside with a change in position. In diagnosis, it is important to analyze chest pain with the appearance of characteristic changes in the electrocardiogram specific to myocardial infarction and an increase in enzymes in the serum. Acute myocardial infarction requires urgent medical intervention, i.e. re-opening of the blocked coronary artery, which is achieved by early myocardial reperfusion, fibrinolytic therapy, percutaneous coronary intervention or surgery.
The aim of the research was to examine how informed the general population is about acute myocardial infarction and to examine the differences in knowledge about myocardial infarction depending on the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants.
The survey was conducted via a Google form in the period from March to April 2022. A total of 357 respondents participated in the survey and it was anonymous and voluntary. The questionnaire was shared on the social network Facebook.
Of the 357 respondents who participated in the research, there were 237 (66.4%) female respondents and 120 (33.6%) male respondents. The largest number of respondents was between 21 and 30 years old (32.5%). In 20.2% of respondents, they or someone from their family was diagnosed with a myocardial infarction. As many as 87.4% of respondents believe that information about myocardial infarction could be increased by providing education in secondary schools and colleges, and 51.5% of them would be interested in participating in education about myocardial infarction. A statistical difference was obtained in information about acute myocardial infarction depending on the age and level of education of the respondents.
