Abstract (english) Introduction and objective: Social competence refers to a series of skills and behaviors that an individual possesses and which are crucial for a person to function in his private and professional sense. These include social, cognitive, emotional skills and behaviors that help us navigate different social situations. It is the skill of the individual to assess the situation he is in and to properly use the skills needed to calm or resolve the situation. A nurse must possess a high level of social competence in order to be able to carry out the entire health care process in a complete and humane manner. Work experience and years of service are not a requirement for someone to be socially competent, but with the length of work experience and through work, one can work on improving the same competencies through education.
The goal of this research is to gain insight into the assessment and self-assessment of the social competence of nurses and technicians of different levels of education, age and gender, and how the length of work experience affects social competence and whether there is any connection between them.
Methods: The research was conducted through an anonymous questionnaire that was intended for nurses/medical technicians and included 102 respondents from the area of northwestern Croatia. The survey was conducted online in the form of a Google form and via social networks in the second half of August and the first half of September 2023. The questionnaire consisted of thirty-one closed-ended questions and one open- ended question.
Results: The research provided data that the general average of assessment and self- assessment of social competence for all respondents together is 4.10. Other data prove that there is no statistically significant connection between gender and intensity of social competence and that medical technicians have noticeably lower social competence compared to nurses, but these differences are not statistically significant. The second hypothesis denies that there is a statistically significant relationship between length of service and social competence. The social competencies of nurses/technicians do not differ with respect to their degree, and with respect to the workplace, there are statistically significant differences in self-assessment and assessment of social competence.
Discussion/Conclusion: The research indicated an increasing need for lifelong education in all spheres, including in the field of emotional interpersonal intelligence among healthcare workers. With the answers to the open-ended type of question, we obtained statistically significant data, namely that people are eager and need education and, in a professional sense, to adopt better social competences in order to function more easily or to be cohesive as a working community. The research proves the great need for education on social competence in healthcare. With sufficiently socially competent health workers, the patient is approached humanely and as an individual, and the health care process is carried out in a proper manner.
