Abstract (english) Introduction and goal: Decision-making is a constant process in both professional and personal life, consisting of a series of interconnected activities, whose ultimate goal is to make a decision. Decision-making is essential in nursing practice. Nurses and technicians (hereinafter referred to as nurses) often encounter various problems and situations during their working lives where it is necessary to make correct and quality decisions based on data. Patronage nurses and home care nurses visit patients in their homes and are not able to consult with a team working on a hospital ward or rely on medical technology available for monitoring the patient's condition in the hospital. A patronage nurse and a home care nurse must possess extensive knowledge and sometimes rely on their intuition or judgment to act correctly in situations that require urgent reaction.
The aim of this study is to examine whether there are differences in decision-making between nurses based on their level of education and whether there is a difference in decision-making methods between nurses working in patronage health services, home health care facilities, and the hospital system.
Methods: The research was conducted using a quantitative research method and included 328 participants. For the purpose of the study, a survey questionnaire consisting of 20 questions was used. The first part of the questionnaire related to the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants, such as gender, age, level of education, work experience, and the sector in which the participants currently work. The second part of the questionnaire addressed statements regarding nurses' procedures related to decision-making methods.
Results: Nurses indicated that patronage health services and home health care require a higher level of education because they need to independently make the right decisions for the patient and their family. Participants also pointed out that proper and quality decision-making leads to a higher level of stress, with an emphasis on strong communication skills and developed empathy towards the patient.
Conclusion: Nursing is a profession that requires continuous improvement due to the increasingly demanding healthcare system and the competencies required of nurses. Professionalism, empathy, communication skills, and ethical behavior towards patients, regardless of gender, age, or race, are what make a nurse unique and high-quality. Continuous skill development and higher levels of education facilitate decision-making, which is crucial for both the patient and their family.
