Sažetak (engleski) | Rheumatoid arthritis, abbreviated RA, comes from the Greek word "Rheuma" which means "to flow". It is a chronic, inflammatory systemic, and autoimmune disease of the connective tissue, not only in the joints but also in the entire body, which most often occurs in
the peripheral joints. 1% of the population suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and it can occur at any age, most often between 35 and 50 years of age. It occurs more often in women, i.e. two to three times more than in men. In most patients, it begins gradually with symptoms such as weakness, weight loss, and fatigue. Then inflammations, swellings, pains, and symptoms of stiffness appear and thus irreversible tissue damage occurs. A symptom that characterizes rheumatoid arthritis is morning stiffness that lasts at least 30 minutes. The patient should contact the doctor as early as possible to establish a diagnosis and to start appropriate treatment in time. In the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, medicinal and physical therapy and kinesitherapy are used. The physiotherapist can influence the reduction of the consequences of the disease (exercise tolerance, reduced muscle soreness), but not the course of the disease or genetic factors, and also help the patient to improve problems related to daily life activities. Over time, patients with RA develop deformities, and the patient can be unable to take care of themselves and perform daily activities on their own. It is very important to support the family and talk to the healthcare professional so that the patient's quality of life is not reduced. Physical and physical activity is also very important, as well as the implementation of physical therapy, which should take place once a year in an appropriate rehabilitation center. |
