Vaccination is the most effective method of contagious disease prevention, a public health project that has saved two to three million children a year worldwide. As a public health method of prevention, vaccination is mandatory in many countries and as such has evident epidemiological indicators of vaccine efficacy. Despite the proven efficacy of the vaccine, the reason for the increasing number of unvaccinated children is due to parents’ fear of side effects of the vaccines themselves and doubts about the effectiveness of the vaccination, incorrect and inaccurate communication with health professionals, as well as the rapid uptake of various information that can be readily obtained today through the media and the Internet from various antivaccine movements accompanied by a negative media campaign. Healthcare professionals play a central role in maintaining the general public’s confidence in vaccination. This includes addressing parents’ trust issues and their concerns about vaccine safety. It is very likely that this concern will increase as vaccination methods will inevitably become more complex and parents will more readily access diverse information via the internet and social networks. By educating and enlightening, patients are given the necessary means to manage the disease process itself. Managing the disease process results in improved quality of life and fewer days spent in hospital.
