Gestation or pregnancy is the period that begins with conception in the fallopian tube and ends with childbirth. During pregnancy, a woman goes through a series of physiological, anatomical, biomechanical, and postural adjustments. Most of adjustments are noticeable after the first weeks of pregnancy. Physiological changes occur as the fetus develops and grows and the mother prepares for childbirth. Some of these changes affect normal biochemical values, while other changes may mimic pathological conditions. It is important to know the normal physiological changes from pathological conditions that can develop in pregnancy. During pregnancy a woman goes through hormonal changes, weight gain, increase in total blood volume. All these factors have an impact on the physiological system of pregnant women: changes in the musculoskeletal system, endocrine, reproductive, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal and renal systems. Also, in pregnancy there are postural and biomechanical changes, especially in the second and third trimester where a change in posture can be observed, compensation of lumbar lordosis leading to flexion of the cervical spine, adduction and internal rotation of the shoulder girdle, anterior rotation of the pelvis, hyperextension of the knee and heel support. Due to the fact that in pregnancy there is an adjusted posture or compensation in certain segments, there is often pain in the lumbar back, pelvic girdle, lower extremities. Due to the appearance of pain, it is important to know these changes in order to be able to assess postural status.
