Texturing in the context of a 3D model denotes the process of texture map creation. To understand 3D textures it is necessary to begin with the fundamental property of object perception. Reflection of light is a phenomenon which allows the differentiation of surface qualities. 3D models reflect light in 3D space in a process called shading. In what way will particular objects be shaded is regulated by the parameters of the shader which are applied to the surfaces of the 3D model. Shaders are specialised programs which contain reflectance functions whose parameters describe various properties which affect the reflection of light. There are many models of such functions in existence, but currently the standard system of parameters is determined by the PBR model. PBR, which stands for Physically Based Rendering, is a model of displaying 3D models which adheres to the natural laws of light behaviour. The parameters of shaders can be controlled by using various texture maps. This way it is possible to adjust the reflection for each pixel on the model. Texture maps are applied to the model by projection in a process known as UV mapping. A UV map is a map in a two-dimensional coordinate system which consists of U and V coordinates in the form of UV points. UV points correspond to each vertex on the 3D model in 3D space. UV maps for a model are first created by UV projection with basic geometrical primitives and then edited in the process of UV unwrapping where the boundaries between UV points are defined in the form of UV shells. What textures are needed to be created is determined by the type of the shader. With the common workflow for PBR, it is necessary to create three essential maps: albedo, metallic and roughness. There are many additional maps which can be created, but the most important one is a normal map which is created by baking the details from a high-poly model onto the low-poly. Texture maps can be made traditionally using snapshots of UV maps inside 2D space or by 3D painting directly on the model. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages. As texture maps are digital images, it is possible to optimize them by reducing the resolution and by packing greyscale maps into channels for better performance during rendering.
