Abstract (english) The theme of the final paper is a preliminary solution for the construction of a small hydro power plant on the river Plitvica. By definition, small hydroelectric power plants are „hydroelectric power plants which use mechanical power of water to get electrical power “[1]. In the Republic of Croatia for small hydroelectric power plants have determined a limit that allows for hydroelectric power plants to be referred to as „small “ and it is installed by the power of 10 kW to 10 MW. The construction of small hydroelectric power plants requires plenty of time and funds for documentation management and the realization of the project. That is the reason why the SHERPA program has been developed by the European Union with the aim of overcoming all obstacles encountered by member states in the process of designing the construction of a small hydro power plant. In order to construct an efficient and good quality small hydroelectric power plant, it is necessary to properly choose all its parts, along with defining investment costs and finding a good location that can provide the development of specific areas. The main parts of small hydroelectric power plants are the following: water catchment areas of the dam, sand filers, flumes, machine rooms, power outlets, low voltage cables, and culverts. To achieve a smooth operation, it is necessary to define a good location for the small hydroelectric power plant. The most important thing to consider is the preservation of the flora and fauna, as well as the quality of human life. The most significant economic reasons for the construction of small hydroelectric power plants are as follows: business possibilities and new investments, the development on the local level, creating independence of electricity import and minor maintenance costs. A preliminary solution of this final paper has a goal of emphasizing the investment in renewable energy sources and examples of choices of all parts of small hydroelectric power plants, cost calculations, and the whole process of constructing the small hydroelectric power plant on the Plitvica river. Namely, it is the small hydroelectric power plant that is economically fitting for a profitable construction and the restoration of investment and generating electricity that supplies residents. The construction of a small hydroelectric power plant is invested in an ecological way of life.
