This paper summarizes the work principles and closure of a sanitary community waste landfill, with some more attention dedicated to the aspect of environmental protection. It shows an estimate of the needed landfill space, briefly covers the preparation and testing of the terrain as well as the recovery of the existing condition and the preparation of new sections of the landfill for the acceptance of waste. It briefly shows the technological process of waste disposal as a very important segment of proper operation of the sanitary landfill. With the development of geotechnical engineering and the appearance of new, primarily geosynthetic materials, the process of waste disposal has been greatly improved while at the same time increasing the security of the landfill. The characteristics and the execution procedures of the sealing layers are explained in detail as the most important ecological barriers between the landfilled waste and the environment. The drainage systems and the degassing systems are also components of these layers, whose purpose is to control and to minimize the effect the sanitary waste has on the environment.
